Mythic Races A D20 System supplement from Fantasy Flight Games Rating: (5 out of 5 hearts) by Jean-Michel |
"Mythic Races" is the second hardcover book in the Legends &
Lairs series published by Fantasy Flight, the first one being "Traps
and Treachery". This book details twenty-seven new races that can be
used for PCs or NPCs.
Each race has an average of six pages devoted to it, accompanied with illustrations.
The first few pages of each description follow the Player's Handbook's format,
with the same entries of personality, physical description, relations, alignment,
lands, religion, language, a list of names and the typical motivations for
an adventurer of that race. The next entry gives the racial traits again
in the PHB's format. A prestige class specific to each race follows, some
of which use unusual Base Attack Bonus and Saves progression. Some descriptions
of races include new feats, skills and spells appropriate to those races.
When necessary, the Level Equivalent class level adjustment is provided.
Here is a taste of some of the races included here.
The Niomus are winged humanoids living on mountain-tops or even in the
clouds. The prestige class provided with this race gives a powerful Niomus
the ability to shape clouds and solidify them as he or she wishes. They
use that power to build floating cities and fortresses.
The Siarrans are artistically inclined, natural musicians with four arms.
Some new feats specific to that race let them use those extra arms in combat.
The Luminous are humanoid beings made of Positive Energy, radiating light.
The prestige class coming with that race is the Lightbringer, a Paladin
type that eventually gains the Celestial template.
The Eleti are skeletal undead that can produce offsprings by replacing
one of their bones with that of a corpse. They can be of any alignment,
and that usually greatly affects the way they perceive the living. They
usually try to pass themselves off as living beings and mingle with society.
The prestige class accompanying that race is a kind of necromancer studying
undeath from within.
The Anaema are a humanoid race cursed with insubstantiality. They are mostly
ethereal and must succeed at concentration tests to interact with normal
materials. The Aneama Crafter, the race's prestige class, can craft tools
that are quasi-magical so that the Aneama people can use them. The Crafter
can also craft magic items at lower gp and XP costs. These people are extremely
serious and very dour. Maybe the name of their race is a pun suggesting
a cure for their constipated attitude?
A larger section describe Fairies good and evil: the folk of the Sidhe.
Their lands, the Fairy Realms or Dreaming, is described and some information
regarding the Fairy Court of Queen Titania is provided.
Other races include a humanoid smaller than Halflings, many races of humanoid
animals, the Risen Demon race (which is the reverse of Fallen Angels), a
race descended from the union of a Halfling woman and a hound archon, and
many more.
Overall, these new races are quite playable. This book will be very useful
to DMs wanting to populate their campaign worlds with new and unusual races
as well as for players wanting to try something different. It can serve
as a valuable reference document.
Weaknesses: Some powers and abilities use the same names as powers and
abilities already existing, such as Air Mastery and Pounce, although they
do different things. New names should have been found. An odd bit: the Eleti
undead race are allowed to be Paladins. I wonder
can one could turn
oneself?
New rules: Twenty-seven new races and a new prestige class for each.
New Feats, New Skills: Many are very specific to each race.
New Spells: Misaligned Aura, Fatal Error, Rewrite.
Eletor, the mighty undead paladin of Pelor, faces a nasty group of Ghouls.
"I shall cleanse thee, scourge that you are, from the face of the Prime
Material, you cannibalistic fiends!", screams Eletor in righteous fury.
He uses his Greater Turning power and rolls so well on his turning test
and turning damage rolls that he overcomes his own turn resistance, and
together, the Ghouls and Eletor burst into Holy flames.
