Around 1500, the fisrt checkers games were played on a 64 squares board with 24 pieces - just as on a chess board. Rumor has it that in 1700, a new version played on a 100 squares board with 40 pieces was introduced to complicate the games. This version is still in use today in France. In Canada however a board of 144 suqares and 60 pieces is used in tournament.
